Spiced Low Sugar Orange Plum Jam

Easy orange plum jam recipe made with prune plums, mandarin orange, raw sugar and tea spice (tea masala). This pectin free recipe is good for you if you love homemade jams or fruit spreads. I love plum sauce, jam, compote or plums in everything; there are my childhood memories associated with plum jams,my mother used to make best plum jams. I made the plum compote and my favorite plum cake this month, but I was still craving for plum jam and want to have something that’s going to last at least for few days. But I want to make something that is not too sweet and plain. I was looking for something that is spicy and flavorful. So I made this nice plum and orange jam; sweetened with raw sugar and flavored with tea spice.orange plum jam

My tea spice is actually an Indian tea masala; which is the combination of cardamom, cloves, ginger, black pepper and cinnamon. If you don’t have that then you can use these spices individually, as per your taste or you can even spice it with your favorite spice alone; because it’s all about flavor and taste. You can use different spices like ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg depending upon your choice.orange plum jam

This spiced orange plum jam turned out perfect ; bright and full of flavor. As I have used fresh mandarin orange juice  in this recipe; which is actually quite sweet so my jam was sweet enough and I have used very little sugar. But if you don’t have mandarin oranges then you can go for any sort of citrus fruit like naval orange, clementines or lemon. Just adjust the sugar according to the combination you are going to use.low sugar plum jam

I made a small batch of jam which is going to last for few days; so I kept my jam in the sterilized jar in the refrigerator. But if you are looking forward to canning then just go ahead and follow your regular canning process. Just make sure you might have to add little extra sugar if you are going for canning.

  • 2 lbs plums (red or prune), pitted and quartered
  • 1/3 cup raw sugar
  • 1 tsp tea spice
  • Juice of 1 mandarin orange


  1. Place a heavy-bottomed pot  over medium-high heat and toss in the plums. Add orange juice and stir well. Cover with the lid and cook until tender.( about 7-10 minutes).
  2. Mash the plums with the back of wooden spoon or spatula.
  3. Now add the sugar to the pot; mix well and cook the jam over medium-high heat stirring frequently until the sugar is dissolved.
  4. Now add the tea spice and continue simmering for about 10 minutes and keep stirring and skim off any foam that appears on the top.
  5. Continue cooking until the jam has thickened, another 5 - 7 minutes or so. Test whether the jam is cooked by doing plate test or simple ladle test; the mixture should not be too runny. Cook for a little longer if required.
  6. Taste the jam; if you think it’s too tart, add more sugar and cook until it dissolves completely.
  7. When the jam is ready then ladle it into sterilized glass jars. Let them sit on the kitchen counter; once the jam comes to room temperature then place the jars in the refrigerator.
