Asian pear is one of the fruits that I adore since my childhood, we still have two trees of Asian pears in my parent’s house. We used to have pear jam and pear stir fries which are commonly served with rice. The tree used to give fruits in rainy season, which was actually a monsoon break season in India. I have not used Asian pears in my recipes from so many years . I actually miss fresh pears, so when our local grocery store stocked up with them then I bought few fresh Asian pears. Many people don’t know about Asian pears, but this variety of  pears in now easily available in North America. This variety of pear commonly is grown in East Asia, India, and Australia. The Asian Pears which are available in North America are adapted from Japenese and Korean variety of pears. Asian Pears are not generally used in baked goods because of their grainy texture and high water content. But you can easily use Asian pears for the preparation of  salads, jams , stir fries and other desserts with the right combination of ingredients. spice pear tart

Asian pears have a similar texture to that of apples, this fruit is high in fiber and low in calories; it also contains many micronutrients which are good for blood, bone and cardiovascular health. spice asian pear tart

I have also used Cranberries in this tart recipe which enhances the taste of this Asian pear tart , you can also add cherries instead of cranberries. Also, I have flavored this tart with tea spice which is a combination of cardamom, dry ginger, cloves, and star anise. You can also use allspice instead of Tea Spice.

  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (thawed)
  • 2 Asian pears (cored and thinly sliced)
  • 1/3 cup fresh cranberries (halved)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp turbinado sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp tea spice
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract


  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F
  2. Line the baking sheet  with parchment paper and lay out puff pastry on the parchment paper.
  3. Whisk together olive oil, sugar, vanilla extract and tea spice in a small bowl. Brush the puff pastry with half of this mixture.
  4. Layer the thinly sliced pears on the puff pastry to form  a wave-like pattern; leaving 1 inch of the space on all the sides.
  5. Gently fold all the sides of puff pastry to form a border.
  6. Brush the top of pears with remaining oil, spice and sugar mixture.
  7. Sprinkle cranberries on the top, bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until the pastry becomes golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven, let it cool for few minutes. Serve warm
